Winters in Toronto...argh.. On the one hand, it can be beautiful and filled with so many fun winter activities! But, on the other hand, when we start getting into the deep freeze, our bodies can feel tense, not just physically, but emotionally too. How do you feel right now? Have you had enough yet?
With winter bringing in colder temperatures, our muscles tense up and tighten. Massages are an obvious way to loosen that tightness. However, when you add heat in the form of a hot stone massage or Thai herbal heat massage, it adds a whole new level of relaxation and stress relief.
A hot stone massage uses smooth river rocks that are heated and are placed on the back. They can also be rubbed along the back and neck to help relieve muscle tension and pain. In fact, this type of treatment has been used for thousands of years all over the world, from India and China to the Indigenous Peoples of North America to relieve pain and relax sore muscles.
At Rain Spa, we usually use Basalt river rocks because they retain heat for an extended amount of time. You also have the option of adding essential oil to the treatment to stimulate the senses.
Another way of adding heat with a sensory experience is with the Thai Herbal Heat Compress.
It is a fragrant, heated hot pack made of muslin, that contains ingredients such as ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, kaffir, lime peel and camphor. This treatment from Thailand dates back to 5000 years ago, where different plants and their effects were meticulously studied on how they affected the body.
At Rain Spa, we steam the compress and press it into the muscles along with circular and rolling motions to alleviate pain or inflammation. The heated herbs work to open the airways and rejuvenate the senses. This is another perfect treatment for the winter season because not only are you getting the pain relief from the compresses being rolled onto your back but you are getting a sensory experience that opens up your airways. To extend your experience, we allow you to take the compress home to reuse. It can be heated up in the microwave!
At Rain Spa, we truly believe that taking time for yourself should be a priority. These are two great winter massages that will help you through these long deep freeze months. Winter is tough. But that doesn’t mean you have to be tough on yourself!
